"Like most, I joined because I am hunter, got a new pup & wanted to learn how to teach him to be a great retriever. Next thing I know I'm going to these training and testing events to socialize with old and new friends; to help them; to cheer them on! It's a ball!!!"

K. Sheridan

"No more procrastination - once you commit to training with others - then, especially when you enter a test and  put your retriever ton display for all to see - you won't put off the training! Trust me, it gives you incentive to take pup out & train!"

About Us

Leatherstocking HRA was founded in 1996 for the purpose of improving the training and skills of our hunting retrievers. We are located in the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York. We are affiliated with the North American Hunting Retriever Association (NAHRA). We offer field tests, training opportunities, training advice, seminars, and good times with good people and the finest retrievers. Our membership area spans the area west from Rochester to Syracuse, north to the St. Lawrence River, and to the southern tier and northern PA.

We are a family-oriented group and encourage you to bring your family to any and all club events. While our focus is on the retriever breeds, the new upland component of our game welcomes all sporting breeds to our club. Come on out & have some fun with us this year!

While the dogs and field training are the focus of the LHRA and the NAHRA programs, it’s really the friendships that are forged through the non-competitive atmosphere that keep our members coming back year after year. At the annual Field Test the Leatherstocking club hosts,  awards are given and hunting gear & collectibles are raffled and auctioned. During the winter the club gathers for a banquet to recognize last season accomplishments and to plan for the upcoming training/testing season.

The pursuit of titles brings weekend tests, banquets, and opportunities for renewing old friendships as members travel around the northeast and mid-Atlantic coast attempting to gather enough points for that next Field Title. Trained retriever demonstrations at local outdoor events, wineries, and sporting goods outlets offer members the occasion to showoff their retriever’s progress, to attract new members, and make new friends. Hunts, training sessions, and other various outings organized by the club or portions of the membership offer yet more opportunity for members to get together with their retriever-minded hunting friends.
